刮板除渣机主要用于从液体与固体混合物中将符合一定粒度的固体物质分离出来。是一种连续、高效的机械式除渣设备，常用于分选或固液分离的场合。如：锅炉排渣系统，河流挖取沙系统等等。中国第一台刮板除渣机诞生于1987年，用于电力锅炉排渣。

刮板除渣机机构造简单、速度较慢，一般不超过是3m/min，但是因为牵引链条和刮板是直接在槽底滑动，所以不仅阻力大，而且磨损也是比较严重；另外，当锅炉燃用含硫较高的煤种时，链条和刮板还要受到腐蚀。所以，刮板和链条要耐磨，耐腐蚀的材料做成，并要有一定的强度和刚性，以免有大颗粒的渣块落下卡住时被拉弯或者扯断。
